Being Peace

  • The Whole Health Center 162 Gilbert Farm Road Bar Harbor, ME, 04609 United States (map)

There are few who speak to us as solidly and luminously as Thich Nhat Hanh, who has been called "a Buddha for our times."   For he makes the deepest truths of Buddhism – of life – as immediate and simple as our next step or our next smile.  Yet he also addresses our crucial concerns for human relations, ecology, war and peace, trauma, happiness, and inner healing.

It has taken me a lifetime to truly appreciate him.  His disarming simplicity and contemplative depth have aged for me like a fine wine over the years; and each time I come back to him, something within me opens, something within me relaxes, something within me simplifies.

He gently nudges us out of our attachment to complicating the spiritual path, on the one hand, and out of our attachment to our neuroses, on the other.  And he directs us to the freedom and the competence of our own hearts.

In these demanding times – that have been hounding us from within and from without –I thought we could all use the support of his voice and the medicine of his gentle, but penetrating teaching.

In our new summer Thursday evening class series we will share a careful reading and consideration of one of Thich Nhat Hanh's earliest books – Being Peace.  I hope this will be an occasion that leavens our week and leavens our life.

It will be sweet to see each other there.
